How I lost 50 pounds …

Greetings:

As you may know (or may not), I’ve had a strong interest in the 1803-06 Lewis and Clark Expedition since I retraced the trail in a canoe and on foot with four other fellows in 1973.

Nowadays, at the young age of only 76, I do a lot of volunteer writing for the non-profit, volunteer-based Lewis & Clark Trail Alliance, including articles for the organization’s Substack project, where every week we publish an article about the history of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and an article with good, practical advice on places to visit along the 4,900-mile trail.

My latest article, published May 18, 2026, discusses the explorers’ nutrition and energy expenditures, as well as an account of how I lost the 50 pounds on our 1973 jaunt. Here’s the link:

Meat, Misery and Mind-boggling

The Lewis & Clark Trail Alliance offers a rich collection of tools, stories, and resources designed for travelers, educators, and anyone eager to explore the people, places, and lasting significance of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. From planning your own journey along the Trail to uncovering historical context, interpretive content, and partner sites, these resources are a gateway to deeper understanding and discovery.

Here are opportunities for you to learn more and get involved (Tip: As sometimes is the case, a computer’s VPN might block links. If this happens with the links below, temporarily turn off your VPN and retry):

You can subscribe for free to the Substack history articles (known as “Real Stories of the Lewis and Clark Trail”) and the travel articles (“Undaunted Travel”). Click on this link to go to the subscription page.  Paid subscriptions are always welcome (the paid subscriptions help fund the Lewis & Clark Trail Alliance), or you can subscribe for free in the box titled “None/Free” on the right side of the page.

Thank you for your support. Stay healthy! And have fun!
